I read a quote this morning from Brendon Burchard: “People are remarkably bad at remembering long lists of goals…Clarity comes with simplicity.” This is something I also picked up from “Grinding It Out” by Ray Kroc. Kroc says, “KISS = Keep It Simple, Stupid.”
I wrote an email some time ago about how multi-tasking is garbage. Corporate America more or less demands that all employees be able to multi-task, and really what they’re asking is that you don’t focus too much on one thing and never do the best job you can do…it’s so backwards.
Focusing on one thing at a time not only saves time, but also produces a better outcome because you’re able to put all of your energy and thought into one project, or even one step at a time. It ensures the best work possible. This is what you need to do for your goals. It’s natural to want to accomplish many different things, but I can say from experience and from other people’s experiences that working toward all fo them at once is the worst way to go about it.
Get your priorities in order. Figure out which SINGLE goal you will work on achieving, and leave the others for when you finish the first. This will ensure that you stay focused, which will help you work the most diligently (which will consequently keep you motivated because you make the most progress like this), and will help you reach your goal in the shortest amount of time possible. Like Will Smith says, “you don’t set out to build a wall. You don’t say, ‘I’m going to build the biggest, baddest wall ever.’ You don’t start there. You say, ‘I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid.’ You do that over and over again, and soon you have a wall.”
Keep is simple, keep it small. Huge accomplishments are nothing but a conglomeration of small accomplishments done well.
