The only two important things in life

I had an amazing realization yesterday, and I can’t believe I never thought of it before. The realization was that there are only two things in life: the things you can change, and the things you can’t. Are you disappointed? Let me explain.

In the countless seminars I’ve listened to and motivational/self-help books I’ve read, I’ve heard so many times that when you set out to do something (your goal), you should focus on the what and the why. Know what you’re going to do and have faith that it will come to pass, and know why you’re going to do it so that your personal reasons will pull you through the hard times. It seemed simple enough.

The part I wasn’t understanding was when they said, “don’t worry about the how. The how is none of your business.” I thought I understood that but I hadn’t until yesterday. And so there are things you can control, and things over which you have no control. Focus only on the things you can control. Too many people don’t do what they want in life because they worry about the how. If they want to become an author they wonder about how they’ll get an agent or a publisher to read their book. They wonder how they’ll sell the idea to readers as we’ll. I know because I struggled with that.

But we have to learn to accept the things we don’t have power over. I think that’s where the faith that it will work out and we will achieve our goal comes in. Do your best to change the things you can control (for an author, write every day and read every day), and believe that the how will reveal itself to you.
